About
Leith St. John is the author of Being T: The Riftgirl Blog—a raw personal narrative chronicling her experiences as a single trans woman navigating life and love in the early 2000s. She scripted, acted in, and produced a variety of videos under the moniker Riftgirl, including the acclaimed YouTube comedy series The T Word. In 2008, Leith’s groundbreaking work gained national attention when she was recruited by the Stonewall Democrats to lead efforts in engaging the trans vote for Barack Obama’s historic presidential campaign.
Leith’s videos and performances have been featured at international women’s and 2SLGBTQ+ events, and her expertise has made her a sought-after speaker on trans representation and identity. She has delivered keynote speeches at conferences, advised journalists on trans-related topics, and her writing has been published in The Gay & Lesbian Review Worldwide, Make/Shift magazine, and the Muscles & Fights comics anthologies. Leith is also a contributor to Lambda Literary, the preeminent voice in 2SLGBTQ+ literature and criticism.
In recent years, Leith has emerged as a leading voice on the intersections of gender, sexuality, and representation in media and visual culture. She is a guest lecturer at universities and conferences across North America, including Be-All Chicago and Dalhousie University, where her work explores the cultural evolutions of gender identities and their impact on storytelling. Kate Bornstein, author of Gender Outlaw and A Queer and Pleasant Danger, has praised her work, saying: “Please, if you’re taking any classes in Women’s & Gender Studies, bring Riftgirl’s work to your professor’s attention—she’s totally syllabus-worthy.”
Leith lives in Nova Scotia with her husband, two sons, and a rescued cat who stubbornly resists being named.
